Democratic Party MP, Tomor Alizoti raised the concern earlier today that Albanian diplomats get paid poorly when working abroad.

Alizoti asked the Commission of Foreign Policies for a 17% rise in the 2022 budget of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that would go towards better salaries for our diplomatic troupe.

“There are diplomats that are paid poorly, very poorly. They can’t allow themselves to represent Albania the way they should in European cities. They can’t invite someone for a work lunch or diplomatic dinner in a serious restaurant. Albanian diplomats are the poorest in the region, they get paid the lowest in the entire region. Why does Kosovo pay their diplomats more decent wages?” – asked Alizoti.

This concern has been backed up by the head of the Commission herself, Mimi Kodheli, who also added however, that there hasn’t been an improvement in the wages for this category through the years.

Income for the diplomatic troupes living and working abroad on April 1, 2019, were as follows:

  • Ambassador – €1680 euros
  • General consul – €1295 euros
  • Advisor – €1080 euros
  • First Secretary – €895 euros
  • Second Secretary – €700 euros
  • Third Secretary – €635 euros
