Albanian writer and researcher Moikom Zeqo passes away at 71

Well-known Albanian writer and researcher Moikom Zeqo passed away on Monday at 71 years after a long battle with a grave disease, leaving behind numerous renowned works for the culture of the country.

Who was Moikom Zeqo?

The researcher was born on 3 of June 1949 at the city of Durres, but his parents are originally from Libohova, where he also attended his elementary studies.

In 1967, he started studying history at the University of Tirana and graduated in 1971 with a degree in Literature. After finishing his studies, he started off his career as a journalist and literary editor of an eminent newspapers, Drita.

Zeqo moved to Rrogozhina in 1974 where he worked as a teacher for three years. By the end the of 70’s, he began working as a researcher at the Archeological Museum of Durres where he stayed for almost 10 years, moving to the capital afterwards as a specialist at the sector of ancient’s arts at the Academy of Sciences in Tirana.

After the fall of communist regime, Zeqo was appointed chair of the Cultural Committee. In 1991 he entered politics as he was elected in the assembly, serving for circa 6 years. He ended his career as the director of the National Museum, leading the important institution from the difficult year of 1997 to 2005.

He was the author of 62 poetry books, various archeological studies, on the history of art and has also written several screenplays for movies and TV series of an archeological genre,

His works have been translated in many languages such as: English, French, Italian, Greek, Serbo-Croatian, Bulgarian, Rumanian, Polish, Danish and Dutch.
