The pandemic has put the brakes on entertainment in Tirana. The recent wave did not spare actors and as a result, several shows have been postponed.

Tirana’s Puppet Theater will remain closed over the weekend after several actors tested positive for coronavirus, leading shows to get postponed indefinitely.

Children in the capital are left without any form of cultural entertainment, as the National Circus has been closed after being vacated from its premises.

Amelia has been a regular at the Puppet Theater since she was 6, but this weekend the 9-year-old girl will have to think about another alternative.

“I was thinking about going to the theater, but I felt saddened when I learned it will be closed”, said Amelia.

For parents, it remains a commitment to fill in their children’s free time with shows that are not just entertainment, but also educational.

“I am trying to compensate it with something else”, says Arta Topuzi, Amelia’s mom.

The National Theater had planned to raise the curtain this January with a play by William Shakespeare “Coriolanus”, but had to postpone after some of its cast fell ill.

But despite setting a second date for its opening, two other actors tested positive.

The National Theatre of Opera and Ballet of Albania has announced that it will resume its activities by the end of January.

“It will resume in the last week of January with two concerts entirely dedicated to its two founders”, said general director Zana Cela.

The only stage still open is at the Experimental Theater in Tirana with the play “I, Mephisto”.

As Tirana’s population continues to grow, the question becomes whether these activities are enough to keep the capital’s cultural life alive and responsive to rising demands.
