On Wednesday, public school teachers will be coming together to decide about whether or not they will be going on strike, or ask for a meeting with the ministry of education instead, to discuss the current struggles they’re facing at work.

Teachers across the country are unhappy with their working conditions like the lack of transportation, the lack of overtime compensation as well as the all-around lack of teachers in schools due to the pandemic.

Public school staff had warned that they were going on strike on January 19 but this was postponed to a later date by the Independent Syndicate of Educators in Albania.

In comparison to last year, the government hasn’t dedicated a separate fund for the education sector due to the pandemic.

‘The schoolyear needs to be prolonged; we need to create summer schools. In regards to salaries, Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia are way ahead of us. Teachers should raise their voices in the name of their own dignity. The government hasn’t done anything after the first year of the pandemic,” – said  Ndricim Mehmeti, an education expert.

The same stance was held by the ex-deputy minister of education, Nora Malaj, who added that rural areas are facing tremendous issues with the lack of resources and teaching methods.
