President Meta declared that he won’t be participating in his impeachment hearing set to take place on February 1, at the Constitutional Court.

In addition, Meta argued that he doesn’t trust the Constitutional, which according to him, hasn’t responded to the Venice Commission on the issue of the disputed local elections.

“I’m not going before a court, which doesn’t give a rightful answer when it comes to the disputed local elections and which has yet to respond to the Venice Commission on this crucial issue,” – said Meta.

Moreover, the president stated that the greatest concern for Albanian citizens isn’t whether or not he gets impeached, but rather, whether or not their local elections were legitimate.

During his interview on ‘NOW’, Meta affirmed that if the Constitutional does end up ruling in favor of his impeachment, he will be appealing his case.

‘They can impeach me, I have no issue with it,” – said Meta, adding that he will be filing an appeal at a higher European court, but didn’t specify which court that would be.

Even though he won’t be present during his impeachment hearing, Meta said that he isn’t planning to boycott the court session, but will be sending his legal representatives instead.

Ilir Meta was impeached following a Parliament vote on June 9, 2021, which voted 104 votes in favor to 7 against and 3 abstentions.

On February 1, the Constitutional Court is expected to issue an official verdict on the president’s impeachment.
