The residents of 5 Maji street are protesting in front of the parliament against the demolition of their homes and chanting “We are not illegal”.
A dismayed protester told our reporter “I’m living surrounded by rubble”.
“My family and I are living surrounded by rubble and icy cold weather”, he said.
He demands to meet Mayor Erion Veliaj to find a solution.
“They’ve disregarded several requests to meet with us so we decided to barricade this street so they can understand that they cannot walk all over us”, said the head of the family with 13 members.
He claims that his house was demolished, without even signing an agreement.
A government decree signed a few weeks ago gave the green light to demolish several buildings in line with the post-earthquake reconstruction process.
But locals claim that not all the houses that got demolished were damaged by the quake. Some of them refused to negotiate with authorities and have not signed any contract.
As their homes were reduced to rubble, they claim to have not received any rent assistance.
This Thursday, the parliament will convene and discuss various important bills, including one on notary public for the registration of landowners.
