Albanian President Ilir Meta raised the alarm over the current amount of public debt.  warning that it might plunge the country into a serious crisis.

President Meta said in a press conference on Friday that the Finance Ministry has been ambiguous about this year’s public debt, casting doubts about Albania’s financial stability.

Meta said Albania ranks second in the region, after Montenegro, in terms of per capita government debt.

“The debt stock seems underrated. It should be presented in more detail. Real public debt value, as per the end of 2021, can be calculated as more than 84% of the GDP. But, they did not include the arrays on lost trials in international courts. PPP values will reach 45% of the GPD. PPPs have allowed the government to engage in clientelist projects”, said Meta.

President Meta also had a plea for the Parliament.

“Considering the critical situation of the public debt and in order to avoid stumbling into a financial crisis and other consequential social dramas, I call on the Assembly and foreign financial institutions operating in the country to cooperate, in order to provide a real and transparent assessment of our public debt”, said Meta.

In his address, Ilir Meta signaled his return to politics as soon as his presidential mandate expires, that is July 24, unless the president is impeached by the Constitutional Court.

Asked on plans to run in the by-elections, the head of state.

The head of state ruled out plans to run in the by-elections but clarified his intent to join the 2023 local elections race.

“I will race in the name of the people that attended the March 2 protest and I call on them to be ready, as the farthest will be in a year”, concluded Meta.
