At intersections all over the capital city, one can find LED billboards, which advertise for different businesses willing to pay for them. But, according to the latest reports, by grabbing people’s attention, these ads have become a major traffic hazard for both drivers and pedestrians.
Traffic expert Arben Luzi spoke to Euronews Albania about the impact these ads are having on regular citizens and made an argument about why they’re not simply messing with people’s attention span.
Luzi made a list of possible consequences which come from the distraction of drivers from these moving images.
“These billboards are designed in a way that should grab people’s attention while driving. But even the law states that they shouldn’t be placed anywhere near intersections,” – said Luzi.
According to him, things become even more dangerous at night due to blinding lights coming from these screens.
‘At night, you can’t have an interruption of light followed by its sudden reappearance on the screen. This could have detrimental consequences and be a tremendous hazard to people’s lives, including pedestrians,” – he added.
According to the Road Coad, things like signs, slogans, ads, or LED screens aren’t allowed on roads or places where they can cause drivers or pedestrians to get confused.
