The Turkish government will be investing a €6-million-euro fund for the reconstruction of the Lead Mosque in the city of Shkoder.

Considered a first-class cultural heritage moment, the Lead Mosque is prone to flooding each year, due to its proximity to the Drin and Kiri rivers.

For days now, groups of experts are conducting studies of the earth layers and started to build the surrounding walls that will protect the mosque from annual flooding.

Engineer Ledian Limani told Euronews Albania about the details of the project that will be financed by the Turkish ministry of culture.

“The first phase includes the geological study and the compilation of a draft report that will be presented to investors. This is followed by the investment phase, which includes the construction of the embankment on river Kir, which will ensure the permanent protection of the monument,” – said the engineer.

This investment is expected to end around 1 year after the beginning of construction work. The Lead Mosque was built back in 1768, by the founder of the noble Bushatllinj family, Mehmet Pasha, and it is considered one of the most important religious objects in the entire country. The Lead Mosque is ranked amongst the 50 most beautiful Muslim buildings in the entire world.
