DP chair Lulzim Basha signed a decommunization petition today, which coincides with the 31st anniversary of the toppling of dictator Enver Hoxha’s statute.

During his speech at Skanderbeg square, Basha made a public apology to all victims of the communist regime and those who were politically persecuted by it, by acknowledging the fact that DP wasn’t able to complete many processes that still remain unsolved for them.

The head of Democrats stated that he will be sending this legal initiative to Parliament, in order to help stop the mention of the communist dictatorship in discourse as well as the use of communist symbols in public.

“This is a heartfelt apology in the name of the Democratic Party – the party that gave birth to the aspirations for freedom and democracy, directed at all those who were politically persecuted during the communist regime – this apology comes as a result of our failure to bring to completion the many processes involving those who suffered. This petition forces us – as Democrats – to bring this legal initiative to Parliament in order to stop the mention of the communist dictatorship in discourse and the use of communist symbols in public. The vetting of high public officials in relation to their past, during the regime, is a must in the process of cleaning up our public administration,” – said Basha.

According to the DP chair, this initiative also aims to find the remains of those who went missing during the communist regime, while also dedicating a fund that will be used to compensate all those who suffered during this period.
