Kosovo has announced its decision to shelter 5 000 Ukrainian refugees fleeing the Russian invasion of critical parts of the country.
The news was confirmed by Kosovo’s MFA Donika Gervalla, during a report from the Commission of Foreign Affairs.
Gervalla also added that Kosovo will temporarily lift the transit visa regime for citizens from Ukraine and thus create the necessary conditions for sheltering family members of soldiers fighting in Ukraine, who are working in Kosovo for the KFOR mission.
40 Ukrainian soldiers are currently serving in NATO’s KFOR mission in Kosovo.
Ukraine hasn’t recognized Kosovo’s independence and a visa regime is still in place in both countries.
Gervalla spoke before Parliament on the current state of security in Kosovo, adding that the government has asked NATO to shut down the country’s air space in response to Russia’s attack.
On March 3, Kosovo’s Parliament voted on a resolution that calls on the government of Kosovo to allocate a special fund from the state budget to help Ukraine through various forms of humanitarian aid.
