The leader of the Democratic Party (DP) Lulzim Basha has raised the alarm on Tuesday over the COVID-19 situation saying “the situation is out of control as the number of infections is rising while few tests are being done”.

Speaking from a meeting held with healthcare workers and experts from the field, Basha said that the failure of the government’s COVID-19 response squandered the great sacrifice of staying indoors for three months.

“Today, citizens are seeing more victims, more COVID-19 infections, along with a deepening economic crisis. The main hotspots of the virus are now hospitals and community health centers”, said the leader of DP.

“The spread of the virus in hospitals has significantly increased the number of personnel infected with COVID-19, as well as infecting citizens coming at the premises to seek health care for various illnesses. The virus is now being evidenced everywhere, police stations, kindergartens, nurseries and state offices”, added Basha.

The leader of DP said the government has “surrendered” and it’s no longer taking preventive measures, putting citizens’ lives at risk.

“The three months’ lockdown served only to grab millions from secret tenders, as the government did not take any measure to protect the citizens after easing restrictions”, declared Basha.

In a press release, DP raised certain questions concerning the government handling of the virus such as about the number of tests that the country has at its disposal, how are citizens from other cities being treated and healthcare worker’s finances.

“Today it is essential to test and trace personnel and patients infected with the virus, in order to identify as soon as possible and then isolate those who are positive. The situation is out of control but the government is staying silent, while it should have taken measures to activate a broad network of the public and private labs”, declared the Democratic Party in their press release.
