Prime Minister Edi Rama took it to Facebook to address the nationwide protests over rising fuel prices.
Rama said that the country’s oil and energy production capacities is below the actual demand. He also explained that the petroleum extracted in the country is not fit for cars.
“The country’s oil is heavy and is mainly used for bitumen. The energy we produce doesn’t even meet the needs during the rainy season”, said Rama.
The head of the executive argued that price surges were affected by the war in Ukraine, adding that the price of electricity will not go up, like elsewhere in the region.
“We can’t raise the price of electricity and lower that of oil, because energy affects all. Oil is tax-free for farmers. By protecting the price of energy, we protect everyone”, said Rama, adding that the service is offered by the state and not by a private enterprise as in the case of oil.
“Oil is a commodity in the free market and the government has relinquished control of the market price since 1990. The state does not set commodity prices. “The state can not decide and can not impose prices”, added the Prime Minister.
