The EU Spokesperson for Foreign Policy and Security Affairs, Peter Stano, said on Tuesday that the union regrets “Kosovo’s decision to refuse the proposal of the Quint countries” for the rights of Serbian citizens in voting from Kosovo for Serbia’s parliamentary and presidential polls.
“The EU has acted as a mediator, the High Representative was engaged in finding an agreement for a practical solution that would give citizens the opportunity to participate in the polls”, said Stano, adding that Serbia “has been playing a constructive role”, but it was Kosovo that refused.
“Admitting that Serbia has been open in finding a solution, we express our regret that we could not reach a consensus among parties, after Kosovo’s decision to refuse the constructive proposal of the Quint countries”, said EU’s spokesperson.
According to Stano, the decision runs “counter to Kosovo’s commitments” for its European integration and a democratic future, as well as going against principles on defending universal voting rights.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that the decision should be taken between Kosovo and Serbia.
Kurti made the commend during a video conference with the foreign diplomatic corps in the country.
He reportedly told ambassadors and diplomatic representatives that he does not want to strip away the voting rights for dual-nationality citizens, but also, they cannot ‘act in violation to the laws and constitution of the country’
