Fraud claims go up, schemes surpass €700,000

In 2021, the prosecution probed into 579 allegations of fraud. According to a report on the state of criminality in Albania, the phenomenon has seen a steep rise, with financial damages hitting amounts over €700,000.

Hundreds of citizens fell victims to fraud last year. According to data from the Prosecution Office, this criminal offense is on the rise.

The majority of those falling under the police radar for this offense, are usually ex-convicts, and in some cases even women.

Foreign citizens have also been caught after getting involved in fraudulent schemes.

An Italian man called Gabriele Tarroni Longinotti is accused of ‘fraud with severe consequences’ after signing a contract with his compatriot for the import-export of meat from Mongolia. The contract was never respected, and the damages incurred reached €730,000.

A Polish minor residing in Albania is alleged to have extorted some €35,000 from another Polish citizen over an investment for rental cars.
