On January 1, 2022, the Albanian population was at 2 793 592.
According to findings by INSTAT, this number shows a population decline by up to 1.3 % compared to a year ago.
This would be the fifth year in a row during which our population is shrinking instead of growing.
For the first time, our natural growth rate is at a negative, which means that the birth to death ratio was toppled, with 3 296 more deaths than births.
In 2021, INSTAT reported that a total of 42.048 citizens left the country as emigrants.
The average age of our population is also growing – from 38.2 to 37.6 years old – as of January 1, 2021.
