Last year, SPAK surveilled 1,500 people allegedly involved in various criminal offenses.
The phone conversations from over 2,000 phone numbers passed through the filters of eavesdropping officers, leading to the arrest of 179 individuals.
Over 900 individuals were put under police surveillance on suspicion that they were part of organized criminal groups, while another 850 were for corruption.
The wiretaps were used in 129 investigations conducted by the Special Prosecution.
SPAK does not need authorization from the prosecution to use electronic eavesdropping’ devices on suspects, as it has its own surveillance office since 2021.
In 2021, SPAK closed in on 226 out of 675 investigations, but only 20% made it to court.
The others were either dismissed, suspended, or transferred to the district prosecutor’s offices as they were not within the SPAK’s jurisdiction.
