Former PM Sali Berisha declared earlier today that the consultation process for the appointment of the new president hasn’t been transparent.

He deemed the Socialist Party’s and PM Rama’s approach a ‘sham’ while adding that they’re trying to do the same with the opposition.

“Do you have any idea who Socialist MPs have proposed for president? They might have proposed 40 different names but [Rama] will be the one to decide in the end, that’s is why the entire process is a secret,” – said Berisha.

Berisha continued by saying that the Socialist majority already has the votes to elect the president, but with this behavior, “Rama is humiliating the Socialist Party and our civil society”.

In addition, he said that the opposition shouldn’t propose any names for president, at a time when they don’t possess the necessary votes.

In regards to the rift within DP, Berisha said that he doesn’t recognize Enkelejd Alibeaj as the head of DP’s parliamentary group.

“DP’s Congress will convene and elect the new National Council and a deputy chair. I don’t recognize him [Alibeaj],” – said Berisha.

The former PM also declared that he doesn’t recognize any of the past decisions regarding his expulsion from DP and his participation in all of the party’s meetings, according to Berisha, serves to confirm that he is still very much a member of the Democratic Party.
