Last year, Albanians spent €80 million on gambling in state-certified casinos.
Official data shows casinos generated a revenue four times higher than in 2020 and two times more than in 2019, although there was only one licensed by the government, out of four currently operating this year.
Revenue cashed in by the state from gambling taxes rose by 200%.
In 2020, the state collected €6 million and €12,6 million in 2021.
Out of the €80 million spent on gambling, lucky gamblers won back an estimated €3 million.
But apart from licensed gambling dens, another business is flourishing in Albania, that of illegal betting on sports.
Data from the Prosecution Office indicates that in 2021, the State Police busted 70% more illegal betting sites.
