Former Socialist MP Edlira Haxhiymeri has passed away after a long battle with a terminal illness.

The news was confirmed by her family members through a post on social media.

Haxhiymeri served as a professor at the University of Tirana, Faculty of Social Sciences.

President Ilir Meta has also made a public statement to honor her contributions.

The head of state called the news of her passing devastating, while noting that Haxhiymeri was a model of high civic and professional values.
