No candidatures for the country’s new president have been submitted to the Parliament Leadership.

As a result, this rendered the third round of voting for the election of the new head of state, invalid.

During the first 3 rounds which have now all failed, the new president would need to be elected with a minimum of 84 votes in Parliament.

In the last 2 rounds that remain, the Socialist majority in Parliament will be able to elect their own president as they will only need 71 votes to do so, which they already obtain.

However, none of the participating parties – the opposition or the ruling party- have presented a single candidate for president.

At least 20 MPs need to provide their signitures in order to qualify an official candidate for president.

During Albania’s 32 years as a democratic pluralism, there has only been 1 consensual president.

In 2002, through the Nano-Berisha deal, Alfred Moisiu was elected president with 97 votes in his favor.
