Around 40% of Albanians believe corruption is the main security threat in the country.
Meanwhile, 27% ranked corruption as a secondary concern.
These are the findings of a study conducted by the Center for the Study of Democracy and Governance financed by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
“We asked whether corruption levels increased or decreased in the past 5 years and many said it has increased”, said the study’s author Arjan Dyrmishi.
“We asked whether they expect the figures to drop in the near future and a majority said no”, he added.
The third factor for concern about the country’s security was organized crime, with 11.2% of respondents listing it. Meanwhile, 19.2% ranked this phenomenon as the second.
“We asked: Do you believe organized crime uses corruption as a tool? And people said: Yes. Corruption is perceived as the main threat”, he said.
According to the same survey, 30% believe war with neighboring countries is the second threat to national security.
