Albania loses about 20 thousand inhabitants each year. Emigration to Western countries dominates the return of Albanians to their homeland, where 450,000 have left and 237,000 have returned over the last decade.

Net migration figures show that our country has lost 7.5% of its inhabitants since 2011.

The data released by the Institute of Statistics reveal that the rates of emigration have accelerated in 2021, while the effects of abandonment have been seen in 11 districts across the country, with the exception of Tirana.

The mass migration of Albanians started in 1990, and 32 years later depopulation figures don’t seem to have stopped.

Italy, Greece, the US, and Germany are the countries where the majority of citizens have moved to in the last 3 decades, and the number of immigrants in these countries reaches well over 1.2 million.

Health, education, social services, and, in general, the improvement of the quality of life, have become the main demands that have motivated these departures.
