Lecturers of public universities in Tirana and the surrounding areas have held their second day of protest in the name of a salary increase this Tuesday.
Contrary to what has happened in the districts, the lecturers who were many in number today, staged their protest in front of the Polytechnic Faculty in Tirana, after boycotting their classes and holding their protest from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The head of the Teachers’ Union, Sander Kovaci, said that the lesson boycott will be daily until their demands are met.
“We will continue our protest, 7% is an invalid increase that won’t change the situation of higher education in Albania. The boycott will continue every day until the government promises that our demands will be met. There will be no classes today, students understand us. Over 75% of the public supported the idea that we are right in our demands. We don’t want to escalate; we don’t want to stop teaching. Lessons will be replaced, in extra hours, on weekends”, said Kovaci.
For several weeks, public university lecturers have been protesting to demand a 50% salary increase within the next 2 years.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has responded to lecturers by saying that there will be a 7% salary increase, but the rest will be left up to decisions made by the universities themselves.
