Albanians agree when it comes to opening the files of the former communist regime.
Asked by Euronews Albania’s Barometer, 79.7% of them think that the files should have been opened. Only 9.3% of them answered no and 11% answered I don’t know. Meanwhile, 84.3% of Albanians think that people involved with the former state security should have been excluded from any state post, while only 7% have expressed that they should not be excluded.
The age group 55-64 years old with 89.2% has the greatest interest in opening files, followed by the age group 65-75 years old with 88.8%, the age group 25-34 years old with 86.6%, 35-44 years old 85.1% 45-54 years old with 80.7% and the 18-24 age group with 73% has less interest.
Meanwhile, 76.9% of Albanians think that it is not too late to reveal the truths of communism after they said that the files should be opened now. Only 16.1% think that files should not be opened now.
Among those who want to open files, the age group 55-64 years old with 81.6% prevails, followed by the age group 25-34 years old with 80.5%, 65-75 years old with 78.1%, 35-44 years old with 74.8%, 45-54 years old with 73.3% and 18-24 years old with 69.8%.
But those who want the opening of the files are not divided even by the political divide, 86.4% of those who are in favor of the opening of the files are voters of the right and 71% of them are voters of the left.
The findings were collected from Euronews Albania’s Barometer in collaboration with MRB and Data Centrum, carried out during the period 9-21 September 2022, at a national level with 1000 face-to-face interviews.
