Ermira Kacaci, the mother of the 31-year-old who earlier today was seen punching the head of the Democratic Party Sali Berisha, said in an interview for Euronews Albania that her son suffers from mental health problems.

She called on politicians not to use this incident for their political gains. The mother underlined that her son is not a sympathizer of any political party and apologized to Sali Berisha for the act committed by her son earlier today.

“I don’t want my son’s misfortune to be used by the police. He worked as a motorcyclist, delivering pizzas. He has no friends who deal with these kinds of things. He was absolutely not used by anyone. He has had different problems. He had absolutely no political affiliations. He doesn’t even go to vote. I don’t know why he went to the protest today. I apologize to the man that was assaulted by him, Mr. Berisha. I don’t want a political party to be involved in his [health] problems. I am very sorry that they are dealing with people’s misfortunes”, said the mother.

THE INCIDENT:

Gerti Shehu, 31 years old, attacked the head of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, at noon on Tuesday, while the latter was marching towards the boulevard “Deshmoret e Kombit” to participate in the protest.

The 31-year-old punched Berisha in the face, causing light bleeding.

He was immediately detained by Berisha’s bodyguards and in the meantime was assaulted by DP supporters and sympathizers.

The 31-year-old was later escorted by the police and is currently receiving treatment at the Trauma hospital, as he has several facial injuries and a fractured nose.

Officers have tried twice to interrogate the young man, but due to his health condition, he has not given any confession so far. It is suspected that the 31-year-old suffers from mental health problems. Both Berisha and Meta have accused Rama of the incident.
