Former president Alfred Moisiu declared that the current chair of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, and former prime minister Fatos Nano used to interfere in his work during the time he was president.

During his interview for Euronews Albania’s ‘NOW with Erla Mehilli’, Moisiu said that once, he had a clash with them regarding the Attorney General, while also shedding light on the time they wanted to remove him from office.

Excerpt from Erla Mehilli’s conversation Alfred Moisiu:

Moisiu: Since they proposed my name for the new president of the republic, I told them two things. I thanked them but also told them that I have a professional education and family education and I do not accept interferences in my work, which is why ‘you should not interfere!’. They accepted this either with their silence or by saying that they got the message, but in reality, they did not implement it. They still sought to intervene indirectly.

Mehilli: Both of them?

Moisiu: Both but more so Berisha. We had a fight over the attorney general. I too had my thoughts about the attorney general. But when the prime minister stands up and says he is not the man for this job and that we should remove him, this is not his duty, the Constitution only gives this right to the president. If you are going to intervene without talking to me beforehand, the conversations will always end up being done after the fact. Where is the separation of powers then? The need to have everything under one’s control held politicians hostage and is still holding them hostage as we speak.
