Albania and Kosovo will come under joint basketball league which will be called “The Unique League”.
The story was confirmed by the respective federates who told the media that on September 10 they will sign an agreement which will mark its establishment.
The agreement will be signed by the presidents of the two federates, Avni Ponari and Arben Fetahu, while Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama will also be attending.
Prime Minister Rama, a former professional basketball player, is expected to introduce the official emblem of the league.
The establishment of this league comes after long held discussions and attempts from both sides, who have finally found the support of International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
The Unique League will comprise eight teams, four from Albania and four from Kosovo. Meanwhile, two representatives from each country will be at the board of executives.
Playing under a joint league is a major step forward for Albanian sports as it will potentially boost competiveness and bring closer Albanians from the two sides of the border.
It is worth mentioning that there is a similar wish for football as well but the respective federates have yet to receive UEFA’s support
