Even though the head of civil emergencies said earlier today that the situation in Lezha is under control, the city’s mayor, Pjerin Ndreu, said that the situation in this municipality is problematic, due to the heavy rains and intense flooding.
In an interview for Euronews Albania, Ndreu said that 5 families have been evacuated so far, while adding that some houses are currently underwater.
Among other things, Ndreu stated that there have been problems with power cuts in some areas and that groups on the ground are working hard in order to resolve the issues.
“The situation is now problematic in the central area of the city. Mainly in the “Beselidhja” neighborhood and in the Vanadi area, especially in Trec. We are at the stream, which has an extraordinary flow. We are intervening on the bridge, to clean it and lower the level of the river, in the sense that it does not pass to the neighborhood on the other side, which puts us at further risk. We are intensively dealing with the evacuation of all residents who are most at risk. So far we have evacuated 5 families, and the situation is under control. An amount of 70 mm of rain has fallen since 4 AM, not even predicted by the Military Meteorological Service. We found it unusual and difficult to manage rainfall flow. If there is no more rain, there will be a quicker stabilization. Energy is a problem in some areas as well”, he emphasized.
