Albanians spend more on food compared to Europe. According to INSTAT and Eurostat data for 2022, an Albanian family spent 39.7% of its budget on food.
In comparison, Europe spent an average of 13.6% of the total budget on food, almost three times less than Albania.
Although with a slight decrease, compared to a year ago, where the budget for food and drinks was 41.3%, Eurostat data show that the expenses of a family in Albania for food are the highest in Europe.
This is an indirect indicator of poverty, as expenditure on food and drink is vital.
In the region, Albania ranks first, followed by Bosnia-Herzegovina and North Macedonia 32.2%, then it is followed by Montenegro and Serbia, which spend a quarter of the family budget on food.
Spending a significant part of the monthly income on food leaves less space for other activities such as entertainment and various cultural activities, which occupy 2.7% of the budget for Albanian families, against 8.4% in European families.
