The Justice Appointments Council will convene on Monday to choose the candidates for the Constitutional Court, which according to procedure will then need the approval of the President of the Republic.

Candidates aiming to fill in the remaining vacant spots are Aleksandër Toma and Përparim Kalo, while some other candidates were disqualified as they did not fulfil the legal conditions.

JAC will rank the candidates based on points and then it will be up to the President to give the mandate to the judge.

Last Thursday, the Albanian Parliament confirmed Altin Binaj as the fifth member of the Constitutional Court with 96 votes in favour.

As the president is expected to approve the new candidates, the Constitutional Court is set to get back to its functions after a long period of suspended activities.

The Constitutional Court became dysfunctional as a number of judges were discharged and some even resigned, due to the vetting verification commissions.

The Constitutional Court is one of the preliminary conditions set by the European Union for opening membership negations with Albania.
