The establishment of a sovereign state of the Bektashi order in the country aims to provide a Vatican-like space for Bektashis as well as a way to promote religious tolerance in Albania.

But how has this initiative been welcomed by the citizens?

“He will turn all of Albania into an Islamic country, so Albania will never enter Europe. What do we have to do, everyone has their own religion…”, says one of the townspeople.

“I am of the opinion that we should also create an African state of Albania”, quips another.

For some other citizens, the creation of such a state is the best way to show the world the religious harmony in Albania.

“It must, because the patriarch is a factor and wherever we go these are the richest, religious harmony must be and these are the keys…” says a citizen.

In the last reaction to the media, the Bektashi Sect says that it welcomes the Prime Minister’s initiative and has given details about how the state will function.

According to the Bektashi Sect, the issue of citizenship or passports will be limited only to members of the clergy and individuals in the state administration. The highest leader will be the patriarch, and administrative and religious decisions will be made by a Council.
