The Monastery of Saint Gjergj, built on the ruins of the Wall of Dema, is one of the most special monuments of the first category along the Saranda-Ksamil road.

Between the cult and the history, the Monastery of St. George is little by little being recognized by visitors.

What is missing from this monument are information boards for visitors.

Who want to know the centuries-old history of the monastery and the church.

Situated on a hill, it has played a religious and political role throughout the past centuries.

“The monastery as well as the church were built on the wall of Dema, secondly the monastery has today’s contours of the surrounding walls on a small surface and mainly the most part of the surface of the hill and served as a strategic point later in all past powers controlling the Adriatic Sea, the Corfu Channel for shipping as well as over the prison of Delvina in the eastern part as well as the lake of Butrint, so they have controlled all these positions as strategic points.” – said archaeologist Halil Shabani.

The monastery of St. Gjergj dates back to the 15th century, while three centuries later a church was built inside it, bearing the same name. The church belongs to the Byzantine style and has the shape of a cross.

“The church was built within the territory of the defensive walls of the monastery. It is from the 18th century, and belongs to the type of Byzantine churches in the form of a cross with a dome. This church has only one nave or one hall where all relevant rites are performed,” the archaeologist continued.
