The US envoy for the Western Balkans, Alexander Kasanof, said on Tuesday that the United States strongly supports the territorial integrity, sovereignty and multi-ethnic character of Bosnia and Herzegovina also added that the attacks on the Dayton accord and calls for secession by Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik are irresponsible.

He made these comments during a visit to Bosnia at the beginning of a visit to the region, during which he is expected to stay in Serbia and Kosovo, writes VOA.

Kasanof said that the path followed by the president of the Serbian entity “is a dangerous dead end for Bosnia and puts the future of Republika Srpska at risk.”

He warned that the United States “will continue to use all means, including sanctions, to hold accountable those who threaten or attempt to undermine the Dayton Peace Agreement as well as the state of Bosnia and its institutions.”

The pro-Russian president of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, who has long sought the secession of this entity from Bosnia, is now under American and British sanctions.

The United States says Dodik undermined the 1995 Dayton Peace Accords, which ended the 1992-1995 Bosnian war that left more than 100,000 dead and millions displaced. At the end of the war, Bosnia was divided into two autonomous regions, the Republika Srpska and the Bosnian-Croat Federation, linked by a weak central government in Sarajevo.

The American envoy is expected to meet with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in Belgrade on Wednesday, while in Kosovo, according to American embassy officials, he is expected to meet with government officials, opposition leaders, civil society and businesses.

This will be his first visit to Kosovo since he took office, which was held by diplomat Gabriel Escobar until May.
