In Gjirokastra, young couples are no longer having children. For 2024, there are 90 fewer babies than a year ago. The immigration of young people, the tendency of couples to have fewer children, the economic problems of young families, are having negative effects on the demographic indicators of fertility.

“The birth rate in this maternity hospital compared to a year ago is something lower, about 80-90 births less, despite the fact that we include the entire South area, a large part of Saranda, the Delvina area, Tepelena, Permet and Gjirokastra ”, Migena Kuro, Gynecologist.

The change in lifestyle is another factor that has influenced, postponing the birth of the first children in years.

“Young men or women who want to have a career is quite normal because they think of securing a career first, then creating their own economic conditions, a house in order to expect the baby in optimal conditions”, Migena Kuro, Obstetrician.

The district of Gjirokastra is registering a significant decrease in births from year to year, making it rank among the cities with the smallest population in Albania.
