The year 2024 recorded a 30% increase in road accidents compared to 2023, according to data released by INSTAT, with Shkodra experiencing the most significant rise.
In Shkodra, the number of accidents jumped from 33 in 2023 to 124 in 2024. Regarding fatality rates, there were 11 deaths for every 100 accidents.
Overall, 1,666 road accidents occurred in 2024, a significant increase compared to the 1,258 accidents in 2023, marking a 30% growth.
Injuries and Fatalities
Alongside the rise in accidents, the number of injuries and fatalities also increased. In 2023, 1,731 individuals were injured, while in 2024, the number rose to 2,255 injured persons. Fatalities maintained a rate of 11 deaths per 100 accidents, as noted by experts.
Causes and Demographics
Non-compliance with traffic rules by drivers remains the leading cause, accounting for 89.3% of accidents.
Young people aged up to 34 years were responsible for 24.2% of road accidents.
Geographic Distribution
Most accidents occurred in Tirana, Durrës, Lezhë, and Vlorë. Notably, Berat recorded the lowest number of accidents, with only 30 accidents, a figure unchanged from 2023 to 2024. In contrast, all other cities saw an increase in accidents, with Shkodra leading the way.
