Albania is among the countries with a high prevalence of alcohol consumption in the population. According to official data, 14% of individuals over the age of 15 in the country consume alcohol beyond the permitted limits, while 1.5% are dependent and consume alcohol at levels harmful to their health.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the alarm that alcohol consumption is a cause of seven different types of cancer, ranging from oral cancers to breast cancer, which has become the most widespread in Albania in recent years.
Experts state that every alcoholic beverage causes damage, and the higher the consumption, the greater the risk of developing one of the seven types of cancer.
They blame alcohol for over 119,000 deaths annually caused by tumor-related diseases.
Recent studies have shown that no amount of alcohol consumption is safe. Experts explain that alcohol can cause cancer through multiple mechanisms, the most common being DNA damage and disruption of the hormonal cycle.
