The Albanian Parliament has approved amendments to the electoral code with 108 votes in favor.
These changes eliminate any costs for citizens and ensure full coverage of postal expenses for votes cast from abroad.
Another legal amendment guarantees that votes returned by mail will be counted by a balanced bipartisan commission.
Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha requested a vote in Parliament for Besim Ndregjoni, the opposition’s nominee for the position of People’s Advocate. The head of the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group, Niko Peleshi, stated that the consultation process had been lacking.
“We have no stance on Besim Ndregjoni and no objections to any candidate,” said Peleshi.
“Do not put it to a vote now; let’s consult further. We can agree on a distinguished representative of the politically persecuted,” Berisha stated.
In the end, both sides agreed to remove the issue from the agenda.
