In 2024, electricity production from hydropower plants in Albania decreased by approximately 10%. However, this decline did not create a crisis in the sector, as part of the shortfall was compensated through imports and a reduction in energy losses.

Electricity generation was lower than expected, with hydropower plants and solar panels producing a total of 7.8 GWh, compared to 8.8 GWh in 2023.

According to data from INSTAT, the majority of electricity production came from public hydropower plants, contributing 52% of the total, while solar power plants accounted for 6.5% of total production.

Throughout 2024, Albania imported approximately 2.6 GWh of electricity, representing a 40% increase compared to the previous year, while exports dropped to 2.3 GWh, about 18% less than in 2023.

Regarding electricity consumption:

  • Households consumed 3.4 GWh
  • Businesses and other institutions consumed 3.1 GWh
  • Total energy consumption in 2024 reached 6.5 GWh, exceeding the level recorded in 2023.

Meanwhile, 1.6 GWh of electricity was lost in the network, accounting for 20% of total production. These losses occurred due to technical issues or electricity theft.
