The Skanderbeg Monument in the center of Tirana has been covered with scaffolding, sparking a wave of controversy and speculation on social media.

After much debate, Prime Minister Edi Rama responded in a Facebook post, clarifying the real reason behind the monument’s covering.

According to Rama, the scaffolding was erected to create a mold for a replica of the monument, which will be installed in the ‘Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu’ Square in Paris.

The Prime Minister emphasized that this project is part of a successful diplomatic effort, with French authorities approving the placement of Albania’s National Hero’s monument in a square in Paris named after him.

Rama described this initiative as an important diplomatic achievement for Albania, highlighting the country’s growing influence and respect on the international stage.

Once the work is completed, the Skanderbeg Monument will stand in one of Paris’ most well-known squares, giving global recognition to this symbol of Albanian history and national pride.

Rama’s Full Statement

“A persistent ‘kua-kua-kua’ is echoing through the social media swamp, accusing me of national betrayal for covering Skanderbeg’s monument during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

The truth, however, is very simple—and beautiful. The scaffolding is there because molds are being taken to create a replica of the monument, which will be placed in ‘Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu’ Square in Paris.

Yes, you read that right—Paris will have its own Skanderbeg!

After long and successful diplomatic efforts, and because Albania is now heard with respect, we have secured French approval to install the National Hero’s monument in a square bearing his name.

The work will continue for a few more days, and once the scaffolding is removed, even the heartbroken patriots wailing in the ‘kua-kua-kua’ swamp will be able to admire Skanderbeg’s horse again—though they’ll have to find another betrayal to accuse me of.”
