The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, who is on an official visit to Albania, was in the city of Elbasan today, where she visited several centers funded by the EU.

Her visit to Elbasan coincided with the traditional Summer Day celebration, which she expressed great joy about.

Kos stated that the EU will continue financing projects in Albania and acknowledged the country’s progress, although she emphasized that more work and further reforms are still needed.

“This is my first time in Elbasan, and I didn’t know much about the city before, but I am delighted to be here on Summer Day, such a blessed day. It has been a pleasure not only because of the celebration but also because I had the chance to see some of the important projects funded by the European Union. First, we visited a workshop where women create wonderful carpets, and we spoke with them about their stories. Then, we participated in another project funded by our grants that supports women affected by domestic violence. It was difficult, but also encouraging, to speak with those women. Of course, the most wonderful moment was visiting ‘Vaskal Todri’ school, where we had the opportunity to speak with students who were truly impressive. We will continue working to ensure EU funds keep coming and that these projects move forward. Each of them is remarkable in its own field, but the ones closest to my heart are those dedicated to youth and future generations. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to meet various stakeholders, including government representatives and other civil society actors,” Kos said.

She expressed optimism that if work continues at this pace, a conclusion could be reached by the end of 2027. She also emphasized that if Albania maintains the same level of dedication, it could become a member of the European Union, increasing the number of member states from 27 to 28.

“I can say that Albania has made extraordinary progress. Naturally, there is still a lot of work to be done, and further reforms are necessary. However, if it continues at this pace, then it is certain that we will complete everything by 2027 and move forward as quickly as possible. I would like to congratulate all Albanian citizens for what they have achieved so far, but by continuing with this pace and passion, I hope the European Union will no longer have just 27 member states but will become 28, with Albania joining us,” said the Commissioner.

She also wore two traditional “verore” bracelets for Summer Day, expressing her belief that this symbol could bring good fortune to both the EU and Albania.

“I was told that these bracelets bring luck, so I put on two—one for Albania and one for the European Union—so they can bring good fortune,” Kos said.
