Albania is negotiating with the European Union in order to obtain a grant valued at 11 Million euros needed to boost up the anti-COVID vaccination program.

The news was announced by the EU ambassador Luigi Soreca during the inauguration of the advanced scanning device funded by the EU, which was delivered to the University Hospital Center “Mother Theresa”.

“Together, [with the Albanian government] we are negotiating to reach an agreement, over a grant of 11 million euros for the vaccines, the devices necessary for the distribution of vaccines as well as the actual purchasing of vaccines. I hope to be able to sign this agreement in the days to come,” – said Ambassador Soreca.

The grant is expected to help out with the vaccine preservation as well as distribution infrastructures as well as with the procurement of additional doses.

During the ceremony organized in the headquarters of QSUT, the minister of Health Ogerta Manastirliu was also present and gave a statement saying that she greatly appreciates the EU’s support during this pandemic.

“The next challenge ahead of us is over the vaccines. And I am hopeful that our agreement with the EU will be finalized as soon as possible. So that we can continue to guarantee the vaccination process, parallel with what our administration has been doing,” – said Manastirliu.

The Minister said that in the following week, they are expecting another 9 thousand doses from our contract with Pfizer.

Albania has prepaid the international COVAX mission, in order to secure enough vaccines for 800 thousand people.

“[…] we are continuing to negotiate in order to realize other contracts. The vaccination process is a trial, it is a process, it is a goal in and of itself to be able to ride that last mile towards the beginning of the end of this pandemic,” added the Minister of Health.
