The recent decision by the United States to impose a 10% tariff on goods from Kosovo has highlighted two issues that analysts say could negatively impact the country’s current political and economic situation.
According to experts, the first issue, already known but now more clearly exposed, is the rift and lack of cooperation and communication between the country’s two key institutions: the Presidency and the Government.
The second issue revealed by President Trump’s move is that Kosovo has actually been imposing a 10% tariff on U.S. products since 1999. Economists say this decision was made by UNMIK, and no Kosovar government has addressed or amended it since.
They emphasize the urgency of initiating talks with U.S. authorities to remove this tariff and avoid unnecessary political debates on the matter.
The U.S. imposed the 10% tariff on Kosovo as part of a broader decision by President Trump to introduce new tariffs on all European countries, including those in the Western Balkans.
