Fifty-two years after the uprising at Spaç Prison, former political prisoners who rebelled against violence are once again drawing attention to the suffering under the dictatorial regime.

Lek Mirakaj, sentenced to 10 years in prison for “agitation and propaganda,” is one of the former inmates of Spaç. Reflecting on his experience at the infamous prison, he said the 1973 uprising only intensified the inhumane treatment of prisoners.

The Authority for Information on Former State Security Documents (AIDSSH) organized an event at the Prime Minister’s Office Library to mark the anniversary and presented a new website dedicated to Spaç Prison. This digital archive contains testimonies, documents, maps, interviews, and educational materials about the prison and the May 1973 uprising.

“The site includes: lists of political prisoners and personal stories; archival documents and contemporary testimonies; information on the Spaç Uprising and protests in the camp; materials on the disappeared, and commemorative exhibitions,” said Gentiana Sula, head of AIDSSH.

The website, which is publicly accessible, is designed as a tool for raising awareness and educating younger generations—bringing the past into today’s digital language.
