The Vjosa River is one step closer to being included in UNESCO’s prestigious list as part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
The International Advisory Committee of the Man and the Biosphere Programme has approved the application file for the inclusion of the Vjosa River Valley in the UNESCO list.
The news was confirmed by Minister of Tourism and Environment Mirela Kumbaro through social media, describing the development as a crucial step toward international recognition of the unique natural and cultural values of Europe’s last wild river.
Prime Minister Edi Rama also reacted, stating that this is news that fills Albanians with pride and emotion after long efforts: “It is more than an international acknowledgment—it is recognition of Vjosa’s wild beauty.”
The final confirmation by UNESCO is expected during its 37th session, to be held in September 2025.
