Gjirokastër hosted the 9th edition of the “Polyphony Gathering,” an event that passes on the values of folk tradition to the younger generation.
“The education of the new generation through isopolyphonic songs and traditional dances of Gjirokastër” was the main message of this event, aiming to encourage and promote our cultural heritage. Under the direction of “Grand Master” Roland Çenko, the “Polyphony Gathering” conveys the values of folklore to young generations.
“I’m very proud of these children because they all love it, and this is a unique opportunity for them. I’ve worked wonderfully with them and I’m very pleased,” says Çenko.
Such events are organized as initiatives to promote young performers of Albanian folklore and to encourage the preservation of our cultural heritage.
“We’re divided into two groups — the youth group and the children’s group. The youth group includes about 23 people, and the children’s group has 30 or 35 members,” says one girl.
“I think I’m doing the right thing, and I see that the children are very interested. That’s all I can ask for. I enjoy it, and I go there with no hesitation because they always welcome me warmly. They’re eager to learn — it depends on how much knowledge they have, but overall, it’s going well,” adds Çenko.
Polyphonic singing, a World Cultural Heritage value under UNESCO protection, continues to attract more and more young people, ensuring its transmission from one generation to the next.
