Serbia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed concern over recent statements from Montenegro regarding its support for Kosovo’s independence and active lobbying for Pristina’s membership in international organizations.

A day earlier, Montenegro’s Foreign Minister, Ervin Ibrahimović, stated in an interview with Montenegro’s national broadcaster RTV that he would support Kosovo’s accession to international organizations.

“Montenegro will offer clear support when the question arises of whether Kosovo should be part of the European Union or the Council of Europe,” Ibrahimović declared.

Although some parties within Montenegro’s ruling coalition do not recognize Kosovo’s independence, Ibrahimović said he believes this position will not jeopardize the coalition, citing Montenegro’s clear foreign policy priorities.
One of these priorities, he noted, is maintaining good neighborly relations.

“Montenegro is recognized by international partners as a country that fosters good neighborly relations. Therefore, we will support our friendly state, Kosovo, because it is a foreign policy priority for it to become the next member of the European Union—and this does not contradict our positions,” he added.

Serbia’s Foreign Ministry described Montenegro’s remarks as “contrary to international law and the UN Charter, as well as to the principles of good neighborly relations.”

In a statement, the ministry urged neighboring countries—including Montenegro—to refrain from actions or statements that might “escalate tensions” and instead work to strengthen mutual trust.

“We believe it is essential to focus on preserving positive relations, rather than supporting anti-Serbian activities, further divisions, and conflict,” the statement concluded.
