Although they will no longer be part of the new legislature starting in September, 82 MPs will continue to receive half of their monthly salary from the state budget for up to three years, according to the current legislation governing the status of high-ranking public officials.

This benefit is based on Article 7 of the law on supplementary state pensions, which, in the section on transitional compensation, stipulates that upon leaving office, an MP is entitled to two full monthly salaries, followed by 50% of the gross reference salary for the duration of their time in office—up to a maximum of three years.

Currently, the gross monthly salary of an MP is 310,000 lek, meaning that each former MP will receive 155,000 lek per month until 2028.

According to calculations, the beneficiaries are distributed as follows:

  • 45 MPs from the ruling Socialist majority
  • 34 MPs from the opposition
  • 3 MPs from the Social Democratic Party

This financial compensation is considered support for former public officials after leaving office. However, it has sparked public debate due to its high cost to the state budget.
