Over the past two days, a wave of resignations has begun across the country’s municipalities, following Prime Minister Edi Rama’s request for a refresh of leadership structures in local government.

In several key municipalities such as Fier, Durrës, Vlorë, Korçë, and Gjirokastër, resignations have been submitted in succession. On Tuesday, resignations were also registered in the municipalities of Vau i Dejës, Sarandë, Berat, and Selenicë, where deputy mayors, administrators, and directors have stepped down from their positions.

However, not all municipalities have complied with the prime minister’s request. In the south of the country, some local leaders have refused to carry out dismissals. The Mayor of Konispol, Ergest Dule, told Euronews Albania that the current directors are young and not performing poorly, adding that the prime minister’s request has been misunderstood by the media.

A similar stance was taken by the Mayor of Skrapar, Adriatik Mema, who emphasized that the leaders were appointed recently and that their performance will be evaluated before making any decisions.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Himarë, Vangjel Tavo, stated after a meeting with the prime minister in Durrës that the deputy mayors in his municipality are also newly appointed, implying that they will not be dismissed.

On the other hand, a day earlier, several opposition mayors sent a letter to international institutions, expressing concern about the violation of local autonomy as a result of recent decisions taken by Prime Minister Rama.
