The Central Election Commission has enrolled the Social-Democratic Party (PSD) in the elections, the party under the chairmanship of Tom Doshi.
The decision was taken following a meeting of the Central Election Commission, despite the continuous appeals of the international community and the opposition to refrain from enrolling his party.
Tom Doshi may now officially enter the electoral race.
Doshi came under the spotlight after the US Ambassador to Tirana, Yuri Kim, mentioned him specifically as a “model that should not be representative of the Albanian people”, bearing in mind that he was referred to as a “corrupted figure” by the US Department of State.
The Social-Democratic Party was established in 1991 by Skënder Gjinushi, who ruled the party until 2019, afterward withdrawing to become the chair of the Academy of Science.
In the 2017 elections, with Doshi joining the social democrats, the party was able to secure around 15.000 votes, predominantly from the district of Shkodra, and establishing Doshi as a lawmaker in the Albanian parliament.
